COVID Current List of Open Manhattan Jazz Clubs – OCT. 2021

The light at the end of the tunnel report – We are finding it difficult to pull together jazz tours that can get to three clubs a night within 4-5-hours as we did prior to March 2020.  In March 2021 we were able to start touring again – taking guests to live jazz performances in only one club per night, which was a blessing, hearing some of the most joyous nights of music we ever witnessed.

Nowadays, we are happy to report that hearing live jazz in two clubs per night is becoming typical on certain nights of the week.  Importantly, some regularly scheduled outdoor jazz events have been produced by local heroes throughout the pre-vaccine pandemic to great effect – bringing all-star players into intimate settings with little or no fanfare.  These events helped sustain the scene through very dark times and proved the neighborhood jazz culture was strong and its roots ran deep in the community.

Berta Alloway continues to present great bands with surprise guests sitting-in every Sunday between 2-5PM at Ralph Ellison Memorial Park (150th Street and Riverside Drive).  Trumpeter and Vocalist, Michael Young is there with Soul Guard every Saturday from 2-5PM also with an open policy to join the jam.  While the weather holds up Al Mtu is hosting a session every Wednesday at Grants Tomb (122nd and Riverside Drive) from 5-8PM.  Berta is there with the Befo’ Quotet every Friday.

The best kept secret for nearly 60 years is that Jazz Mobile has been producing star-studded jazz shows every summer throughout the city including their regular shows at Grant’s Tomb on Wednesday and Marcus Garvey Park on Fridays.  Mark your calendars for next year as their 2021 season has already ended, which of course included the co-sponsored Charlie Parker Jazz Festival at the end of August at Marcus Garvey.

It’s ever-changing, but this is a pretty good list of what’s happening with live jazz clubs this month in Manhattan.
